Thoracic & Vascular
Thoracic and vascular care focus on diagnosis and treatment of all heart, vascular, thoracic (the chest), and lung diseases. Cardiac surgeons deal with heart transplants, heart disease, coronary artery disease, heart failure, and heart valve blockages. Thoracic surgeons focus on the lungs, esophagus, and other chest organs and they treat lung cancer and emphysema.
Common procedures include:
Vascular bypass surgery of the legs
This type of surgery redirects blood through a grafted blood vessel to transfer blood to the vessel that is damaged. The grafted blood vessel may be a healthy natural vein or artery, or it may be man-made.
This is a procedure used to remove plaque buildup in the carotid arteries (provide blood to the brain), in hopes of avoiding a stroke.
To remove part or all of a lung, a cut must be made on the side of the chest. This allows the doctors to avoid areas containing the heart and spinal cord.
Pneumonectomy of the lung
This is a surgical procedure where the whole lung is removed as treatment.
