Johnston Medical Associates- Specialty Clinic is a community-based, multispecialty practice offering rheumatology, infectious disease, gastroenterology and neurology services. We are committed to providing quality and cost-effective medical care to a diverse population of patients with chronic medical conditions and special needs.

Our physicians are now part of the UNC Physicians Network. UNCPN provides physician practices the operational support to allow them to do what they do best – provide quality patient care. Practices affiliated with UNCPN have access to additional operational support, specialty and subspecialty care providers and the health care system’s electronic medical records system. Alma Jenkins, MD

A native of Selma, Dr. Jenkins has been practicing for more than 20 years. Jenkins earned her medical degree in 1979 from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn. and her B.S. degree from Elizabeth City State University, where she graduated summa cum laude. She is a 1971 graduate of Smithfield-Selma High School. Jenkins completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at Emory University Hospital Systems in Atlanta and a fellowship in gastroenterology at Bowman-Gray Medical Center. She is board certified in gastroenterology.

J. Alex MacDonald, MD

Dr. MacDonald received his medical degree and completed a fellowship in neuro-rehabilitation at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. He finished residencies at Boston University and at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. He decided to pursue a medical career in neurology after his grandfather was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Today, he treats this and other degenerative diseases as well as Alzheimer’s, stroke and movement disorders. He is also interested in headache medicine and rehabilitation from neurological injury. Before coming to Johnston Health, Dr. MacDonald was the medical director of rehabilitation at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Anshul Rao, MD

Dr. Rao is a graduate of the University of Toledo Medical College in Toledo, OH. He completed a fellowship in rheumatology at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, OH and an internal medicine residency at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. Before coming to Johnston Health, Dr. Rao was in practice for a year with Wayne Heart and Internal Medicine in Goldsboro, NC.

Octavio Cieza, MD

A native of Peru, Dr. Cieza came to Johnston Health from Barnwell, SC. He received his medical degree from the National University of San Marcos in Lima. He completed his internship at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, OH, where he also completed an internal medicine residency. Dr. Cieza finished a 2-year infectious disease joint fellowship program at the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois. He received HIV/AIDS clinical training at the University of Texas at Houston. Dr. Cieza has been involved in numerous clinical research trials and specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. He is also fluent in English and Spanish.

Raj Majithia, MD

Dr. Majithia attended medical school and completed his residency training in gastroenterology at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA. He completed his fellowship training with a special focus on advanced endoscopy at Georgetown University and Washington Hospital Center. He is board certified in internal medicine and board eligible in therapeutic biliary endoscopy.

We make every attempt to schedule appointments both with new patients and established patients as quickly as possible, particularly if there is a current medical concern. If you have an urgent medical problem, you will be scheduled for the first available appointment. You may need to see a provider other than your primary care provider. If you are not able to make your scheduled appointment, please notify us within 24 hours. Please bring all of your medications to each appointment. We require 24 hour notice for prescription refills.
