What is Interventional Radiology?

Interventional radiology is a therapeutic and diagnostic practice that uses minimally-invasive image-guided procedures. Interventional radiologists use CT scans, MRI, ultrasounds, and other imaging methods to diagnose and treat diseases in almost every organ of the body. These procedures are replacing more open surgeries and major medical procedures because they involves less risk, less pain, and shorter recovery times.

Some common procedures in interventional radiology include: vascular interventional procedures, kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty, angiography, vascular stenting, catheter embolization, chemoembolization, cryotherapy, needle biopsies of various organs (lung, liver, breast, kidney), radiofrequency ablation of tumors, thrombolysis, shunts, thoracentesis, paracentesis, pain management injections, and vascular access procedures.

What to Expect

Interventional radiology includes a wide range of procedures, each with different preparation requirements. Your physician will educate you on preparation for the procedure ordered.
