Through an affiliation with Duke Medicine, we are able to provide the latest chemotherapy treatments to our patients at Johnston Health Hematology Oncology.
The main purpose of chemotherapy is to kill cancer cells anywhere in the body. Chemotherapy can cure some types of cancer. It may be used to slow the growth of cancer cells or to keep the cancer from spreading to other parts of the body. Following surgery for removal of a cancer, chemotherapy may be used to keep the cancer from returning. Also, chemotherapy can ease the symptoms of cancer to help some patients have a better quality of life.
How chemotherapy is administered depends on which drugs are given and the type of cancer a patient has. Chemotherapy may be given topically, orally, by injection (intravenously, intramuscularly, or into the cancer itself), or through a catheter or port inserted into a central vein or body cavity.
