Nursing Awards & Accolades
The DAISY Award
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), an auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
Nurses may be nominated by patients, families, and colleagues and they are chosen by a committee of nurses at UNC Health Johnston to receive The DAISY Award.
Awards are given throughout the year at presentations given in front of the nurse’s colleagues, physicians, patients, and visitors. Each Honoree will receive a certificate commending her or him for being an "Extraordinary Nurse."

The PETAL Award
When you or a loved one experiences exceptional support from the professionals working alongside nurses at UNC Health Johnston, you can acknowledge their efforts by nominating them for the PETAL Award. Hearing about the outstanding care you receive inspires us to celebrate those who go above and beyond.
PETAL stands for Provides Excellence To All Lives. The award is for certified medical assistants, nursing assistants and nursing techs who provide compassionate, personalized care that makes a real difference during your time with us.
Nominations are reviewed by a committee, and recipients are recognized in front of their colleagues, patients and families. Keep an eye out for a PETAL pin at your next visit to a Johnston location, which recipients wear proudly to signify their excellent care.
