Their gift of time valued at more than $740,000

Their talents are impressive, from running gift shops to sewing fidget quilts and surgery pillows to awarding scholarships for students headed into health care careers. Last year, the 148 men and women who volunteer at UNC Health Johnston gave 23,500 hours of their time.

During a recent luncheon at the Johnston County Agricultural Center, hospital leaders applauded their efforts. “With the growth in our county and the demands it places on our hospitals, we need volunteers now more than ever,” CEO Tom Williams said. “You’re extremely helpful in taking on tasks we don’t have the staff or time to do.”

David Mills, chairman of the UNC Health Johnston board of directors, unveiled a $747,300 check representing the value of the volunteers’ hours. “It’s hard to place a true dollar value on what you do,” he said. “Your gentle touch, your kind words and smiles are priceless.”

While all the volunteers received certificates, five were honored with special awards.

Hospital volunteers Don Cody in Clayton and Carol Clary in Smithfield were presented with the Sue Archambeault Award for exemplary volunteerism.

Volunteer chaplain Franklin Rawls received the Overa S. Stevens award for faithful service.

Cecilia Hicks, a hospice volunteer of more than 20 years, received a Lifetime Achievement Award. And Lynne Roy received the Hospice Angel Award for lifting spirits and quietly touching lives.

Williams said volunteers are critical to the satisfaction of patients, to operations and the overall success of the organization. “Thank you for all you do to make UNC Health Johnston the best it can be,” he said.
