Johnston Health Names Chief Medical Officer
Rodney McCaskill, MD, has been named the permanent chief medical officer for Johnston Health. Since Oct. 1, he has been serving as interim CMO.
“Dr. McCaskill has done an excellent job of leading our medical staff and advising our leadership team, especially as we’ve navigated the coronavirus pandemic,” said Tom Williams, president and CEO of Johnston Health. “As a key member of our COVID-19 Committee, he has worked tirelessly to ensure that we have a safe environment for frontline staff and patients. Underneath his gentle demeanor is a fierce passion for patient care.”
Dr. McCaskill is part of Wake Emergency Physicians, PA, the group with whom Johnston Health contracts to provide care in the Smithfield and Clayton emergency departments. In 2009, he was among the original cast of WEPPA physicians when the freestanding emergency department opened in Clayton.
More recently, in July, he began working in the Smithfield ED when the organization expanded its contract with the group. At that time, he accepted the role as medical director of emergency care.
As part of an agreement, Dr. McCaskill will continue working as a WEPPA provider at both emergency departments while he is the CMO. He is board-certified in emergency medicine and has more than 20 years of experience.
“In the emergency departments, I’ve enjoyed the opportunities to share my knowledge with staff and to assist physicians with administrative issues,” he says. “During the past seven months, as I’ve worked more closely with the leadership team, I’ve been impressed with the organization’s hard work, commitment and dedication to providing expert care close to home.”
Out in the community, Dr. McCaskill serves as assistant director of Johnston County EMS.
Dr. McCaskill is a graduate of East Carolina University and the East Carolina University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in emergency medicine in the department of medicine at the University of North Carolina.
He grew up in Goldsboro and still lives in the area with his family.
