Johnston Medical Mall
The Johnston Medical Mall is located across the street from UNC Health Johnston in Smithfield and is home to a variety of outpatient practices. The building is owned and operated by UNC Health Johnston, and some of the offices are rented out to external practices and businesses.
The medical mall has a unique history. The building operated as a textile mill for 88 years. Burlington Industries, which was the last owner, closed the plant in October 1997. The administrator at then-Johnston Memorial Hospital envisioned the shuttered plant as an affordable space for outpatient services. Within a year or so, the hospital’s board of trustees had approved a development plan and, through the County of Johnston, bought the property for $2.7 million. After an extensive $15 million renovation, Johnston Medical Mall opened in January 2003. HealthQuest Fitness and Wellness Center, which is a service of UNC Health Johnston, was the anchor. Through the years, the mall has gradually filled up with outpatient services and medical practices.
