Chuck Elliott, CEO and president of Johnston Health, has been named 2017 Citizen of the Year by the Greater Smithfield-Selma Area Chamber of Commerce.

In presenting the award on Monday night, Chip Hewett, chairman of the Johnston Health Board of Directors, said Elliott led the hospital through a challenging transition, a great recession, a major capital expansion, and a partnership with UNC Health Care. He credited the CEO with setting a new course for improving quality, patient safety and satisfaction.

Elliott, who has been the hospital CEO for eight years, was also recognized for his contributions to the community.

He belongs to Central Rotary of Johnston County, and enjoys volunteering in the Salvation Army bell-ringing and the Three Little Pigs Triathlon, and with raising funds to build and expand the inclusive playground at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center. He has twice been honored as a Paul Harris Fellow.

He’s involved in the work of the Chamber of Commerce, serving on the search committee, and in areas of policy and economic development.

At St. Ann Catholic Church, Elliott has earned the nickname, “St. Chuck,” for his behind-the-scenes support and commitment to the Annual International Food Festival.

At Johnston Health, he gives generously to the causes of the Johnston Health Foundation. And he donates blood three to four times a year.

Bobby Parker, the former chairman of the hospital board, also had praise for Elliott.

“The outstanding hospital we have today is largely due to the leadership of Chuck and his team as well as the many dedicated hospital employees and physicians who serve our community,” he said.

“Chuck was the right man, at the right time, at the right place for our hospital, and we are fortunate to have him as our CEO,” he said. “Given the importance of the hospital to our entire community, I can’t think of a more deserving Citizen of the Year.”

Elliott and his wife, Deb, live in Smithfield. They have two grown children.
