For your health and safety, each one is certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Ashley started working at HealthQuest in 2003 as the Aquatic Coordinator and 2008 became the Director. She is originally from Winston-Salem but moved to Kenly, NC in 2001. Ashley graduated from East Carolina University in 2001 and her hobbies include exercise, arts, crafts and spending time with her husband and two children.
Mary Louise Karstens
Mary Louise started working at HealthQuest in 2013 as a Certified Spinning Instructor (2013). She is originally from Smithfield and currently lives in
Clayton. Her hobbies include swimming, running, competing in triathlons and spending time with family.
Tempe started working at HealthQuest in 2011. She has been practicing yoga for over 25 years and has been teaching yoga for more than 10 years. She did her 500 hour teacher training with Esther Meyers, author of Yoga and You.
Charlene started working at HealthQuest in 2006. She is originally from Randleman, NC and currently lives Clayton. Charlene is a graduate of North Carolina State University and is a certified Land Group Fitness Instructor. Her hobbies include teaching aerobics, outdoors adventures and hiking.
Annie started working at HealthQuest in 2008. She grew up in Georgetown but now lives in Smithfield. Annie is a Certified Pharmacy Technician, Group Fitness Instructor, Masala Bhangra and SilverSneakers instructor. Her hobbies include reading, quilting, sewing and dancing.
Debbie started working at HealthQuest in 2004. She is a native of Smithfield and retired Johnston County school teacher. Her hobbies include spending time with family, loves to dance/shag and reading.
Leslie started working at HealthQuest in 2007. She graduated from UNC-Wilmington in 2002 with a BS in Business Management and a minor in Music. She was certified as a dance educator in 2002 by Dance Masters of America. Leslie’s hobbies include dancing and working at her dance studio in Princeton.
Aerobics Instructor/Service Representative
Originally from Jacksonville, NC, Erica served 6 years in the U.S. Navy. She received her Associates degree from JCC in Community Spanish Interpreter and is a certified Group Fitness Instructor through AFAA and is also a licensed Zumba Instructor. Her hobbies include distance running, homeschooling her three children and reading.
Johnnie has been working at HealthQuest as a water aerobics instructor since 2013. Johnnie retired after 40 years as a registered nurse. Prior to retirement, she became certified in water aerobics as she had personally found many health benefits from water exercise. In addition to activities at HealthQuest, Johnnie is married, has two grown children, and three most wonderful grandchildren. She enjoys swimming, quilting, painting and traveling (especially to Hawaii). Johnnie’s goal at HealthQuest is to encourage others on their journey to improved physical health.
Elizabeth began working at HealthQuest in the summer of 2016 as an Aerobics Instructor. She is currently attending Meredith College and will graduate soon with a degree in Exercise and Sports Sciences with a minor in Nutrition. Her plans for the future include attending Graduate School for Special Education to teach Adaptive PE or maybe Nursing School. Elizabeth’s hobbies include working out, spending time with my family, and going to the beach.
Gwen began working at HealthQuest in the summer of 2017 as an Aerobics Instructor. Gwen has been an aerobics instructor and personal trainer since the 90’s. She has won 3 Presidential Sports Awards and also won the National Master Figure Competition at 45 years of age. Gwen teaches a variety of classes ranging from boot-camp to kickboxing. She has lived in Angier, NC her whole life and her hobbies include teaching Sunday School, spending time with her 5 grandchildren and working outside. Gwen believes that through perseverance, faith willpower, you can just about accomplish anything.
Aquatic Trainer/Certified Pool Operator
Leslie (aka Les) is a native of Pennsylvania but recently relocated with her husband to Goldsboro, NC. She is a graduate of Shippensburg University with a Bachelors Degree in Exercise Science. Certified American Red Cross Lifeguard and Lifeguard Instructor, Certified Pool Operator, Water Safety Instructor, Swim Lesson Instructor, National Water Fitness Instructor and certified in Aqua Zumba. Her hobbies include swimming, exercising, crafts, cooking, and traveling.
Swim Coach and Instructor
Kendra began working at HealthQuest in May of 2016 as a Swim Instructor. She graduated from Meredith College with a degree in Business Management in 2004. Kendra is a certified American Red Cross Lifeguard, American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor, USA Swim Coach and a Certified Pool Operator. Her hobbies include SCUBA Diving, crafts, playing flyball with her 3 dogs and spending time with her husband and daughter.
Barbara started working at HealthQuest in 2005. She was born in Braswell, New Mexico but has lived in Micro most of her life. She is a Certified Personal Trainer, Land Group fitness instructor, kickboxing and SilverSneakers. Her hobbies include spending time with family and running.
Chris began working at HealthQuest in August of 2016 as a Lifeguard and has been working as a Lifeguard since 2015. Chris is currently dual enrolled in high school and attending Johnston Community College studying welding. Chris’ hobbies include hiking, backpacking, camping, adventuring, rock climbing, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, white water rafting and welding.
Emma is a student at Smithfield Selma High School and lives in Smithfield with her family. She started working at HealthQuest in November 2016 and is a certified Lifeguard. Her hobbies include spending time with her family and friends and traveling.
Michelle started working at HealthQuest in 2005. She has been a Licensed Massage Therapist since 2004. She is a mother of three and lives in Smithfield. Originally from Queens, New York but moved to NC in 1984.
Marci started working at HealthQuest in July 2012 and is a Certified Neuromuscular Therapist. She is originally from Texas but moved to NC in 2006. Marci’s hobbies include crafts and playing with her dog, Lexi.
Julie began working at HealthQuest in January of 2017 as a licensed massage therapist. She received her Massage License in 2016 and earned her degree in Therapeutic Massage (AAS) in May of 2017. Julie live in Clayton with her husband and has been blessed with three daughters and two granddaughters. Julie enjoys reading and spending time with her family.
Health & Wellness Specialist
Frankie began his career at HealthQuest in January of 2012 as an intern. He graduated from East Carolina University with a BS degree in Health Fitness Specialist. He is also a certified Personal Trainer through the American College of Sports Medicine. His hobbies include running, lifting weights, training for Spartan Races and walking his dog Duckie.

Eric started working at HealthQuest in 2003 and currently lives in Raleigh. He graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelors Degree in Sports Management in 2000. Has over 17 years of Personal Training experience and is an American College of Sports Science certified Personal Trainer. His hobbies include playing tennis, basketball and spending time with his family.
Samantha “Sam” Barbour

Sam started working at HealthQuest in 2013. She grew up in Minnesota and now lives in Clayton, NC. Sam graduated from East Carolina University with a Bachelors Degree in Exercise Physiology. She is a Certified Personal Trainer and Youth Fitness and Certified Rescue and Master Scuba Diver. Her hobbies include scuba diving, hiking, and pursuing her passion for community outreach.
Amanda started working at HealthQuest in 2007. She graduated from South Johnston High School in 2004 and currently lives in Four Oaks. Amanda’s hobbies include shopping and playing with her four children.
Emily started working at HealthQuest in 2014. She grew up in Clayton, North Carolina and graduated from Wake Christian Academy. Emily plans to major in Elementary Education after finishing her Associate’s degree. Emily’s hobbies include reading and traveling.
Tristen began working at HealthQuest in August of 2016. Having graduated from high school early, Tristen is taking the next year to cultivate her skills and invest in the next step towards a life of missionary service. She enjoys practicing calligraphy, adventuring to new places, and having meaningful conversations with others.
Jonathan started working at HealthQuest in 2007 as a lifeguard and service representative before leaving for college at Appalachian State University. He returned to HealthQuest in 2014 and works as the Head Coach of the HealthQuest Hammerheads as well as a swim instructor and service representative. He is currently pursuing a masters in healthcare. He has a B.S. in Education from Appalachian. He lives in Four Oaks, NC with his wife and dog. When he is not working Jonathan’s hobbies include camping, fishing, and watching college football.
Sales and Marketing Representative
Taylor started working at HealthQuest in June 2016 after graduating from East Carolina University with a Bachelor’s degree in Community Health. She lives in Four Oaks with her husband, Jonathon. Her hobbies include spending time with her family, baking, and watching movies.
Membership Account Specialist
Kim started working at HealthQuest in 2016 as the Membership Account Specialist, with 10+ years of local banking experience. She is originally from Smithfield and currently lives in Four Oaks. She enjoys spending tme with her son and volunteering with JC Schools, Triangle JDRF and Hopewell FWB Church.
Kamryn is a student at Johnston County Early College Academy. She plans to graduate and transfer to a 4 year university to become a Radiation Therapist. Her hobbies include dancing, playing basketball, and spending time with her family.
Shelby has been working as a sitter at HealthQuest since 2014. She is currently studying at Johnston Community College and plans to transfer to Mount Olive College in 2018 to study Elementary Education. Shelby enjoys being a sitter and working with children. In her spare time, she loves the beach and spending time with her friends and family.
Tiarra began working at HealthQuest in August of 2016 as a sitter. She is from Raleigh, North Carolina and graduated from Clayton High School in 2015. Tiarra is currently going to school to become a substance abuse counselor.
