With spring almost here in full bloom, why not start thinking about planting a vegetable garden? You and your family can benefit from fresh food that you grow yourself in many ways. Just a few of the many great reasons to garden are:

  • You can save money by avoiding the need to buy certain foods from the grocery store
  • You’ll feel a sense of accomplishment when you can eat fresh food you grew yourself
  • You know where your food is coming from you don’t have to worry about recalls, chemicals, or pesticides
  • Gardening provides exercise and a way to enjoy the outdoors
  • It can be a fun family activity


Vegetable Gardening for Beginners: How to Get Started

Before your start digging, it’s a good idea to establish what size garden you want and what you want to grow. It’s probably best to start small if it is your very first time gardening. Pick an area of your yard that gets the right amount of sunlight. Most vegetables and flowers need 6 hours of sun a day, but make sure you look up information for the specific products you want to grow.  It is also good idea to dig up the soil and  improve it with compost. By loosening the soil, vegetables roots will grow more easily.
