On Tuesday, April 23, over 160 women from all over Johnston County attended the Ladies Spring Fling to benefit the Johnston Health Angel Fund. The Johnston Medical Mall in Smithfield was transformed into an elegant backdrop for an evening of food, wine, music, vendors, prizes and more. Guests heard from Arqueta Lindsey, the chair of the Angel Fund, as well as testimonial from a cancer patient who received assistance from the Angel Fund. Because of the hard work that was put into this event by staff, volunteers, and committee members, $11,000 was raised to help the cancer patients at Johnston Health.
The Angel Fund provides assistance to cancer patients in Johnston County who are going through financial hardships. It pays for medical necessities such as medicines, therapeutic devices, prosthesis and transportation to and from treatments and doctor’s appointments. Many attendees participated in the Spring Fling because someone in their life had been affected by cancer, and they were able to honor or memorialize their loved ones by writing their name on an angel to be hung outside the cancer centers.
The initial idea for the Spring Fling came from four Johnston County women who were interested in putting together a fun event for women. Helen Daughtry, Kay Kennedy, Julia Narron and Clara Wellons started with a simple idea to plan a small social, and that grew into an event that attracted over 160 women and raised $11,000 for cancer patients. The final committee consisted of 20 captains who went out into the community to tell people about the fundraiser and invite them to attend.
Kennedy thought it was a wonderful event that everyone enjoyed. “There were so many positive comments about the event and there was such a great crowd in attendance.”
The Spring Fling was made possible by donations from vendors, volunteers donating their time, and a corporate sponsorship by Triangle Orthopaedic Associates, P.A. to cover the costs so that 100% of the donations went directly to the Angel Fund to help cancer patients. If you are interested in joining the Angel Fund committee or making a donation, visit the Johnston Health Foundation’s website or call 919-938-7169.
