It’s that time of year again. The sun is shining, the temperatures are rising and many people are thinking about their plans to get in shape for the summer months. A healthy diet is a vital piece of this equation. Incorporating nutrient-rich meals into your routine can lead to a longer and healthier life, and living a lifestyle full of healthy cooking is not as difficult as you may think.

Adding Nutrients to Meals
Adding nutrients to your meals can be as simple as picking out colors. Vibrant colored vegetables and fruits are a rich source of nutrients and provide a plethora of antioxidants. Grains that are fortified and fiber-rich, such as whole wheat spaghetti, are a great way to integrate fiber into your family’s diet. When choosing dairy products, pick low-fat or fat free milk, cheese and yogurt to integrate into your meals. Protein is fuel to your body, and lean meats provide the protein your body craves. If you are a vegetarian, try beans and nuts to supplement lean meats. 

Vitamins are Vital
Vitamins and supplements can ensure you get all the nutrients your body needs to sustain itself. Vitamins can help enhance parts of your diet that may not be as well-rounded as required. If you don’t know where to start when it comes to the vast array of vitamins available, talk to a nutritionist or your doctor.

Effects of an Unhealthy Diet
A poor diet can lead to health problems like diabetes and heart disease. Diabetes can be attributed to a high sugar intake and being overweight. Heart disease and heart attacks can also be brought on by a poor diet. In addition to a nutrient-rich diet, portion control is a key factor.

A well balanced, nutritious diet is a key component of overall health.  Ensuring your family gets the nutrients they need is doable with a little knowledge, and a lot of good food.
