Zumba adds spice to Johnston County workouts

Tired of sweating it out on the treadmill and want to add a little zest to your workout routine? Try a Zumba class!

Zumba is an alternative workout program where you can dance yourself to fitness. Created by dancer and choreographer Alberto Beto Perez in Colombia during the 1990s, Zumba is a Latin-inspired exercise routine. When Perez showed up to teach an aerobics class and realized he forgot his music, he improvised using salsa and merengue recordings he had in his backpack. Born was a new type of dance-fitness focused on letting the music move you (instead of counting beats). Zumba is all about the music.  From hip-hop and samba to mambo and marital arts, the Zumba choreography combines varied dance and aerobic elements. Blaring, red-hot international music featuring contemporary artists, each class becomes a “fitness party.” The high-energy music inspires creative and exhilarating dance moves, and the camaraderie builds a sense of community among members of the class.

So join us Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. and every other Saturday at 9 p.m. for Zumba with Melanie Handy at the Healthquest Wellness Center. Who says exercising can’t be fun?
