blood-sugar-testing-penYou may not have been born with diabetes, but that doesn’t mean you can’t develop the condition later in life. Type 2 diabetes, also known as adult onset diabetes, can manifest people of any age. However, those who are overweight or sedentary are most at-risk. If neglected, diabetes can lead to nerve damage, kidney failure, heart disease or even blindness.

A healthy diet and lifestyle can lower your risk. Recognizing these warning signs will be key:

  • Excessive thirst or hunger
  • Frequent urination
  • Blurred vision
  • Unexplained, sudden weight gain or loss
  • Wounds that heal slowly
  • Numbness or tingling in your hands and feet
  • Infections that keep coming back
  • Tiredness and irritable mood

The symptoms generally develop gradually and worsen as your body becomes less responsive to insulin. However, in many cases, patients experience no telltale symptoms. If you have a family history of diabetes, are obese or suffer from insulin resistance, you should have regular blood checks. Knowing the symptoms and staying on top of your health will lower your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
