Urology

Urology is the branch of medicine that focuses on the medical and surgical diseases of the male and female urinary tract system as well as the male reproductive organs. Those who are specializing in the urology are called urologists and are trained to diagnose, treat, and manage urological disorders.

Procedures may include:

Kidney stone removal
Lithrotripsy laser treatment uses an instrument, machine, or probe to break the stone into tiny particles that can pass naturally through the body. This procedure is the most effective form of kidney stone removal.

Kidney surgery
Depending on the stage and location of the cancer and other factors, surgery may be used to remove the cancer along with some of the surrounding kidney tissue, or the entire kidney.

Bladder cancer surgery

  • Transurethral resection- a small, lighted tube is used to remove or destroy tumors in the bladder
  • Cystectomy- partial, simple, or radical removal of the bladder
  • Urinary diversion- this makes a new way for the body to store urine

Prostate cancer surgery
There are multiple types of prostate surgery that are available to treat prostate conditions. Some people may choose to not use medication or non-surgical therapies, depending on how aggressively they and their doctor would like to treat the condition.

Bladder sling procedures
This procedure restores bladder control by using a thin mesh ribbon to lift the bladder neck to its normal position.

Cystoscopic
This is a test that allows your doctor to look at the inside of the bladder and the urethra using a thin, lighted instrument called a cystoscope.
