Treatments and Tests

Dr. Rao, our rheumatologist, will work with you to find an individualized treatment plan that fits your needs. Medication is the most common treatment for rheumatic disease. Medications can greatly reduce and treat symptoms, but not necessarily cure a patient of the actual disease. Other treatments are usually recommended in combination with medication, and will depend on the severity of each individual’s condition. Some treatment plans include:

  • Rest and relaxation
  • Regular exercise
  • Balanced diet
  • Water therapy
  • Mobilization therapy
  • Heat and cold therapy
  • Medication
  • At home joint care instructions
  • Splints or braces
  • Devices to help with everyday tasks
  • Surgery to relieve pain or restore function
  • Joint replacement

When testing for a rheumatic disease your doctor will perform a physical exam, and go over your medical history with you. X-rays, blood tests, and other lab tests may be performed.
